Homing Pigeons
The Homing pigeon sculpture at the National Service Animals Memorial represents the pigeons that were used during WWI and WWII.
Thousands of Homing Pigeons served in WWI and WWII, saving untold numbers of soldier’s lives They were extremely effective messengers carrying tiny message capsules.
Many pigeons would be sent at the same time of each day to improve the chances of a critical message reaching it’s destination. Sadly, this made it easier for them to become the target of the enemy who fired upon them.
